The Island of Cyprus is the third largest and Eastern most in
the Mediterranean Sea, in area it is some 3,572 Sq. Miles (9,251
Sq. Km). Cyprus is geographically located 47 miles (75 Km) south
of Turkey and the nearest Greek point is the Greek island of
Rhodes which is 200 miles (380 Km) to the west.
The
natural vegetation encompasses citrus and olive groves, pine
forested mountains, and some of the cleanest beaches in Europe.
Prominent geographic features include the Troodos massif that
occupies most of the south western part of the country, the
Pentadaktylos range in the North around Kyrenia and the Messaoria
Plain in between. It is here that the capital city, Lefkosia,
(known as Nicosia when the island was under British Governance)
is located.
